Mongoose publishes Sommerlund sourcebook

Mongoose just announced the availability of a new sourcebook about Sommerlund:

The mightiest of nations in Northern Magnamund is fully explored and detailed in this sourcebook for the Lone Wolf Multiplayer Gamebook. Intended as a resource for both games masters creating adventures and players wanting to know more about the land of the Kai Lords, this book covers the people, cities, and history of Sommerlund, from its earliest days of founding to the current trials against the Darklords.

Loup Solitaire, le Livre de Règles

A few months ago, I received news about goings-on with the French publication. I haven’t been able to get back to sharing it until today. The following is a translation of the original French blurb from Le Grimoire. (Thanks to Antoine, Ben, and Cerulean for help with the translation.)

Le Grimoire has obtained the rights to the French edition of the LONE WOLF role-playing game. Our books are in the form of a large illustrated encyclopedia of the world created by Joe Dever and Gary Chalk for the gamebooks “where you are the Hero – Lone Wolf”.

Loup Solitaire, le Livre de Règles is a comprehensive reference book and a role-playing game together in one volume. All rules are strictly in the spirit of the series of Books Where You are the Hero, published by Gallimard Jeunesse.

Become a valiant Kai Lord, use formidable fighting disciplines and go to war against the forces of Evil plaguing the world! Handle the wonderful charms of the grimoires of the Crystal Star, and wisely use the incredible magic of Dessi! Show yourself worthy of your sword of a Knight of the Kingdom of Sommerlund or use the weapons of the courageous Dwarves of Bor! But also, you can ride the seas with panache, as a Buccaneer of Shadaki! You will tap into the forgotten knowledge of the peoples of Magnamund – material needed to build adventures worthy of the greatest heroic epics of all time! You will charge at the head of glorious armies, battling enemies using your psychic powers to proudly defend the realms of Light.

With all this information, you can enrich and enliven unforgettable game parties. You want to cross the Marshes of Hell? Explore the Caverns of Kalte? This book will reveal what plants will benefit you, how many potions of Laumspur to carry, and what equipment will be needed in these hostile countries. Many are the monsters prepared for war to serve the Tyrant of the Desert or the Cener Druids. From formidable Giaks to the dreaded colossal Giants of Kaum, your opponents will appear to be legion but to fight for honor and freedom is the challenge when you become a hero in a world living under the threat of the Masters of Darkness in Helgedad.

Loup Solitaire, le Livre de Règles

Rune War published!

Evil Lord Vandyan of Eldenora has unearthed the lost secrets of rune magics used by Agarash the Damned during his ancient conquest of Magnamund. Empowered by his discoveries, Vandyan unleashes his armies upon the peaceful realms of the Free Alliance with swift and devastating effect. Lone Wolf, Supreme Master of the Kai, leads the crusade to defeat Vandyan before all Magnamund succumbs to his tyrannical rule.

In Rune War, your task is to infiltrate Skull-Tor, Lord Vandyan’s stronghold, and destroy the ancient runes from which he draws his evil power. Can you succeed in your vital mission . . . or will you fall foul of the traps and terrors that guard the warlord’s mighty fortress?

Coming hot on the heels of the news about Brian Williams’ passing, looking at the illustrations in this book prior to publication reminds me of the talent that we have lost.

The work continues, and we have only four more Lone Wolf books to publish.

Sad News

It is my sad duty to share the news that Brian Williams—illustrator for virtually all of the Lone Wolf books since The Cauldron of Fear—passed away unexpectedly on October 4, 2010. His family contacted us recently with this shocking news.

We mourn the loss of this talented and generous man and have sent our deepest condolences to his family. We will be forever grateful to him for bringing Lone Wolf’s adventures to life and for his generosity toward Project Aon. We have created a memorial web page in his honor with more of our thoughts:

May Ishir and Kai watch over him on his final journey.

Link Bomb, October 2010

I come across websites that may interest Lone Fans in my random wanderings or because someone shared the link with me. Here’s the latest crop:

John Grant (Paul Barnett) was interviewed by fellow author, Chris Redding.

Joe Dever took extensive photographs of a wargame he participated in which was “inspired by the retreat to, and subsequent battle of, Corunna (January 16th 1809)”.

Mei De Koh, a developer on the canceled Ksatria project, has gathered up some YouTube archeology that proves the project happened.

Amiga Games that Weren’t interviewed Ian Upton who worked on the Mirror of Death, a Lone Wolf computer game.

Here’s a profile of Joe Dever, nothing new but you get what you pay for.

Until next time…

Printable and Mobipocket editions of Flight from the Dark

Greetings fellow Kai,

We are now in the process of creating printable (PDF) editions of the books. The first to receive the treatment was Flight from the Dark, naturally. Ingo Klöcker developed the process to create the printable editions, and Daniel Strong performed special illustration transcriptions that made them look even better. The results, in my humble opinion, are gorgeous.

Also, John Broz recently contributed Mobipocket editions of the books. You can download a Mobipocket copy of Flight from the Dark (and if you’re extra clever, the other Lone Wolf books as well).

Please let us know if you spot any problems and, as always, enjoy!
