The Tower of Ninuria overlooks this district of Babylon, and the rich buildings are guarded by guards dressed in leather armour and bronze plates. Here and there, groups of young women chat cheerfully. Passers-by are numerous, offering the spectacle of a crowd dressed up to the nines enjoying the sweet life of this neighbourhood. At the tables outside the taverns, people drink date and sesame wine, an excellent local beer or colourful syrups made from sugar or almond milk. Children munch on sweets and dried fruit. You walk slowly, forgetting for a moment the difficulty of your search and enjoying the fragrant air, but suddenly the peace is disturbed by excited cries: on the doorstep of a luxurious house, a girl dressed in purple and gold veils is arguing heatedly with a brutal man who is beating her. You don't understand the reason for the altercation, but you don't like to see a defenceless girl treated this way. You try to talk to the angry man. “Hey, mate, can't you see you're scaring the children?” you say in a peaceful tone. “There's no need to shout and...”
But the man doesn't react as you hoped, and shakes the young woman even more, paying no attention to you. ‘Come on, stop making a fool of yourself. All this noise is annoying me, and I don't like to see a girl being mistreated,’ you say, and in the hope of discouraging him, you add, ‘Especially since she's under my protection!’ Immediately, the brute turns to you, foaming with rage. ‘So it's you! 381.A servant comes to open the door for you. You enter with your guide and immediately admire the refined decorations: precious woods, carved crystal lamps, vibrant frescoes, curtains and tapestries. Footsteps echo on the stairs, and your hostess appears. “Welcome, friends.” The charming young woman turns to you: ‘I am Nana-Dirat, mistress of this place. And you, handsome warrior?’ Struck by her beauty, you stammer: ‘I am... I am Prester John!’ Your guide explains to her friend the circumstances of your arrival here, chuckling occasionally, then the two girls lead you into a large hall where a table set for forty people stands majestically. The guests are chatting and smiling in a large adjoining room. There are a number of important figures, Babylonian and foreign nobles, and several young women vying for attention with their grace and charm. Their slender hands are adorned with tourmaline and opal rings, and they wear silver necklaces and precious gems around their necks. Tiaras and diadems adorn the foreheads of the most beautiful, accentuating the effect of their splendid make-up. The maiden who brought you here takes you by the arm and murmurs that she cannot stay for dinner, but hopes you will enjoy yourself. With a final thank you, she kisses you on the cheek and disappears. The hostess, Nana-Dirat, apologises and goes to the kitchen to check on the cooks, leaving you alone among the guests. You chat a little with some wealthy merchants from the North, passing through Babylon, then with two girls still in their teens who are impressed by your sword, but none of these people seem to know Barsip the Wise...
Nana-Dirat reappears and announces that dinner is ready, and you are surprised to discover that she has reserved a place for you at her side, on her left. Opposite you sits a slender man with jet-black eyes and thin lips; he is wearing a black silk costume trimmed with silver. A well-groomed beard emphasises his harsh features, and his almond-shaped eyes are fixed on you with disconcerting insistence. The meal is served: exquisite dishes follow one another at a rapid pace, to the great delight of all the guests. The relaxed atmosphere allows you to barely notice that the man in front of you continues to stare at you intensely, and seems to appreciate your chatter with Nana-Dirat very little. You respond evasively to her questions about your arrival in Babylon, telling her about a shipwreck in very cold waters and your journey upriver, but the girl seems much more interested in your muscles than your origins. She runs her hand over your chain mail, under the pretext of admiring it. Rather surprised, you try to divert her attention. ‘Kind guest, I am looking for a sage named Barsip who lives in Babylon, in the Games Quarter. Do you know him?’
Indeed, Nana-Dirat knows him: "He used to come here often with Souhsan, but after his friend's death a few weeks ago, I haven't seen him and I don't know where you could find him.

268.Suddenly, the cold-eyed man sitting opposite you leaps to his feet, knocking over plates and cups in a furious gesture! “I've had enough!” he exclaims. 'Damned stranger, I don't know who you are or where you come from, but your tongue is treacherous! You haven't stopped lying for a moment to win the favour of my fiancée! Nana-Dirat is mine, mine alone, do you understand? And only I can lay my hands on her, by Ishtar!" Nana-Dirat tries to calm the man down, replying that she belongs to no one, least of all him, and that she is free to choose whom she speaks to. The man silences her with a slap. This is too much for your chivalrous spirit! Your code of honour compels you to defend your guest, who has been insulted under his own roof. You punch the brutal individual in the face, taking care to put on your metal gauntlet first. The rude guest is catapulted against the wall, knocking over chairs and crockery as he falls. Nana-Dirat, stunned by the blow, is still unconscious. The man gets up. “You cannot challenge Alshaya the Black with impunity, stranger. You have set foot in this house, and you must accept its rules! Bring the daggers!” You've got yourself into a nasty mess! Two servants bring a pair of chiselled daggers with razor-sharp blades and a long leather cord. One of them hands you the weapons and murmurs, “The rule is simple: your left wrists will be bound, and you must fight with these daggers until one of you dies!” You have no choice: you let him bind your wrist, while the other servant ties your opponent to the other end of the cord. A cruel smile appears on Alshaya's face; he has removed his tunic and is now bare-chested. You take off your doublet and chainmail and weigh the dagger in your hand: a perfectly balanced weapon. Before starting the fight, you reduce your Strength by 3 because you are forced to fight without the protection of your chainmail. The duel begins!
